Tell us about your business and role:
I am Zahra Rastaghi, the CEO of Severesense, a pioneering smart building technology company based in Canada. Severesense specializes in intelligent sensor systems that monitor oxygen and carbon monoxide levels in buildings, proactively mitigating risks before they escalate. Unlike traditional detectors that only sound alarms, our system automatically activates ventilation, cuts off gas and electricity, and alerts users, ensuring enhanced safety and preventing disasters.
What made your team start a business in your industry?
Our team recognized a critical gap in traditional safety systems—most only warn occupants after hazardous levels of carbon monoxide or low oxygen are detected. By the time an alarm sounds, the situation may already be dangerous. We wanted to develop a proactive and intelligent solution that not only detects but acts to prevent harm, saving lives and reducing property damage.
What useful advice would you give to entrepreneurs who want to start and grow a business in this industry, especially if they plan to expand to other countries?
For entrepreneurs in the smart technology and safety sector, my advice is:
- Prioritize innovation and differentiation – Develop solutions that go beyond current market offerings to provide tangible benefits.
- Understand regulatory frameworks – Safety regulations differ by country, so compliance and certification should be factored into product design early.
- Build strong industry partnerships – Collaborate with real estate developers, construction firms, and safety organizations to gain credibility and market access.
- Embrace scalability – Design products with modularity and adaptability in mind, making it easier to expand into international markets.
What led you to bring your business to Canada, and where are you in that expansion process?
Canada offers a strong ecosystem for technology-driven businesses, with government support for innovation and access to a diverse, highly skilled workforce. Our expansion to Canada was driven by the country’s commitment to smart cities and sustainability, aligning with our mission to improve building safety. We are currently in the growth and partnership phase, working with local developers, regulatory bodies, and technology partners to integrate our systems into commercial and residential buildings.
